Chiro checks important for babies and kids
As a baby grows into a toddler it begins to stand and walk, with many crashes and falls along the way. Children get knocked over, fall off scooters and bikes resulting in all sorts of trauma to their skeletal systems. Chiropractic methods for checking and adjusting babies and children are very gentle and safe. It is done by hand or by using a gentle adjusting instrument to help ease the vertebra back into its normal relationship with those above and below it. We offer FREE spinal checks for children so pop in and see us or call 544 4554.
When the spine is out of line it is called a subluxation. Virtually all the nerves in the body go through the spine and when the spine is subluxated some of those nerves get irritated and what results is decreased function in the muscles, organs or glands that are fed by those irritated nerves. Sometimes that causes pain, most often not.
Chiropractic does not claim to be a cure for childhood conditions like colic or constipation. It can however, reduce nerve interference, allowing the body to work better. Many babies show tremendous improvements after adjustments.
Babies' spines can get subluxated prior to and during the birth process. There is pressure on their head and neck during contractions and when the baby passes down through the birth canal. Assisted deliveries such as forceps or ventouse are especially hard on the baby's spine. We recommend all babies have their spine checked for subluxations soon after they are born. If a baby's spine is subluxated its nervous system is not working properly and it can affect nerves to any part of the body.
Often babies are asleep when they are being checked and stay asleep throughout their adjustment - that's how gentle adjustments can be. There is a noticeable increase in the number of babies getting chiropractic check-ups due to public awareness and satisfaction with results.
Sometimes babies are referred for chiropractic check-ups because they are restricted in their movement or generally unsettled. A baby that turns its head one way only or feeds from one breast only may do so because it is uncomfortable to turn the other way. Sometimes babies dislike being in certain positions, for example, on their tummy or across an adult's shoulder. The only way to know if a child is subluxated or not is for a chiropractor to check its spine. If no subluxations are found, great, but if some are present then to have them corrected is very beneficial to the child.
Spinal care is a life long project. All babies and children will benefit greatly by being checked regularly and to develop an awareness of their spine throughout their lives. As parents the decision is yours; but as children the benefits are theirs.
